Bio-Elite's Activated Carbon is a high quality non-dust forming
activated carbon. The surface area of 1050 m2/g is possible through its
vast internal porous structure. It is within these cavities that the
organic waste particles are trapped and adsorbed. The activated carbon
also has the function of removing micro-particles, urine, dyes or any
discolouration from the water, thus enhancing the clarity of the water.
Air pollution is not generally a factor that is considered when taking
care of fish, but the majority of air pollutants dissolve into the water
and can cause ill health among the fish. Bio-Elite's Activated Carbon
removes these dissolved pollutants from the water by trapping them in its
porous structure. If the aquarium is kept in a room where there is an
exposure to cigarette smoke, incense or motor fumes, activated carbon is a
must for the well-being of the aquarium. Remember to replace trace

Some professional aquarists only use activated carbon for 2 - 3 days in
a month to remove toxins and other impurities. However this should be
related to the amount of pollution in the environment and impurities that
are added directly to the aquarium.
There is a limit to the amount of impurities that the activated carbon
can adsorb and therefore it is essential to replace it on a monthly basis.
This is normally the time period in that activated carbon has reached its
capacity and that the efficacy of its trapping abilities declines.
