Bio-Elite's FilterFoam is a strong flexible foam containing no
germicides, pesticides, fungicides, anti-bacterial agents, flame retardants, nor
any other chemical additives. In other words, it is therefore 100% safe for
aquarium and pond use. Bio-Elite's FilterFoam is currently being used
worldwide for aquarium and pond filter applications.
Key Benefits
- Excellent mechanical and biological filter media
- Non toxic to fish or nitrifying bacteria
- Greater surface area for adhesion of nitrifying bacteria
- Greatly reduced risk of clogging or overrunning
- Will not become anaerobic and rot like conventional foam
- Increase in water movement yet removes particulate wastes
- Reduced pump maintenance
- Ratio of surface area to cubic measure is greater
- Washing the media is easy and expels old bacteria shells
- Black colour enhances bacteria growth
- Best value for money media available per square foot
- Will not cloud the water
- Increases the capacity of the tank
- Excess debris is easily flushed away
Conventional foam is too dense for most filtration purposes and causes
filters to clog and overrun. The reduction in water and thereby oxygen flow to
areas of the foam causes extensive anaerobic bacterial growth. These release
hydrogen sulphide and other toxic chemicals, which cause direct fish kills. With
external canister filters, conventional foam can even cause the filter to burst.
A great advantage of using FilterFoam over ceramic rings is that it
can be easily cleaned thereby sloughing off the old nitrifying bacteria shells
and making more media available for active colonies.
Foam Colour
The foam colour does not determine its suitability for aquarium use. Filter
foam made for other applications e.g. the automobile industry is not suitable
for aquarium use. The chemical composition can be such that it is detrimental to
the fish and nitrifying bacteria.
Bio-Elite's choice of the black colour is due to the fact that the black
colour enhances the growth of the nitrifying bacterial colony.
Availability
The FilterFoam is cut to size and available in sheets. FilterFoam
is also available in certain standard sizes such as Aquaclear, Eheim, and Fluval
filter inserts. FilterFoam can be cut to fit all pond filters and
bio-filters.
