Bio-Elite's Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined in South Africa. It is an exceptionally high quality zeolite, that is renowned for its purity.

Zeolites are known for their excellent short term management of ammonia in aquaria and ponds.

Key Benefits

  • Absorbs toxic ammonia
  • Absorbs heavy metals
  • Removes micro particles in the water
  • Enhances the overall health of the aquarium
  • Reduces algae growth
  • Will not cloud the water
  • Non toxic to fish or nitrifying bacteria

Use

  • Media in canister, trickle, tray or box filters
  • New tank setups
  • Ammonia toxicity
  • Local tap water contains chloramine
  • Transportation of fish
  • Stabilisation of pH at a range of 6,2 - 6,8

Zeolites are framework silicates consisting of interlocking tetrahedrons of SiO4 and AlO4. The large vacant spaces within their structure, together with its negative charge, makes the zeolite an efficient ammonia remover.

The negative charge attracts cations (positively charged ions) such as sodium, potassium, barium, calcium and even larger molecules such as ammonia, carbonate ions and nitrate ions. It is this same feature which renders the zeolite ineffective in marine aquariums. The zeolite not only has an affinity for the ammonia, but also for the sodium and calcium ions present in the water.

This is also the reason why in aquaria that utilize zeolite, salt (NaCl) is not a preferred form of treating diseases and should not be added to the water. The addition of salt causes the zeolite to release the ammonia it has trapped within its structure and replace it with the sodium ions. This in turn leads to an ammonia spike which is fatal.

Zeolite needs to be replaced every 2-4 weeks, as it reaches a saturation point and ion exchange ceases and therefore ammonia removal ceases.

Zeolite may be used as biological media in the filter. The nitrosomonas bacteria form colonies in the vast porous structure of the zeolite and start converting ammonia to nitrite. The nitrobacter then colonize the zeolite and convert the nitrite to the less harmful nitrate.
